Announcement re: Region model

The current transition period in the Office for Youth and Young Adult Ministry is making more difficult our attempts at the “regional model” of supporting youth and young adult ministry in the Archdiocese. This being the case, we are moving away from that model at this time. As we move forward, we will continue to support your efforts in youth and young adult ministry within a different structure.

If you have feedback about how we can do that, please utilize the survey that was sent out recently to do so.

Blessings to you this summer.

Update

Hi, Region IV -
Our region met on March 11 at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Kelso. As I mentioned in my email just prior to the meeting, many of you were unable to attend for a variety of reasons, so it was a very small and informal gathering. We reviewed the revised approach to ACCY, the June 5th gathering, and the ACCY notes I had emailed prior to the meeting. I hope that everyone has been in conversation with their youth and their potential adult volunteer(s) who plan to participate in ACCY. As I mentioned in the meeting, we do have some region funding, so please do not let transportation issues prevent you or your youth from participating - please contact me if you are in need of assistance or ideas on how to make this work.

The June 5 gathering will be held in the Isaac Orr Conference Room at the Chancery at 910 Marion Street. The day will focus on discipleship and servant leadership and serve as an orientation and kick-off for the coming year. Please contact me if you did not receive the email with the attachment about ACCY and I will send it to you, again. Also, if you have any questions concerning any of this, please call or email. I am happy to go through all of this with you.

We also discussed Ascend and Ascend HD - required for diocesan delegates, encouraged for regional ACCY. Again, we have scholarships for youth from our Region and we discussed options for transportation, as well.

CMD Certificate in YM Studies Update: The next weekend of YM Certificate Program is coming up April 24-25. It is not too late to register and it is not too late to avail yourself or a volunteer of a partial or full scholarship to attend - please contact me if you are interested in a scholarship.

Upcoming in our Region: 2010 High School Retreat April 16-18, 2010 at Black Lake Camp and NET Middle School Retreat at St. Edward's in Shelton. Contact Dave Whitesell at dwhitesell@saintmichaelparish.org or Jill Foglesong at jill@wlpcatholic.org for more information about these and other South Sound Deanery Youth Events.

I hope you all have a great weekend and that you have a very blessed Holy Week.

Peace,
Frances

New Movie

Hi, Region IV -
It has been a long time since last I blogged! I have been sick - yuck! I hope you all have been staying healthy and that you have had the opportunity to spend time in reflection during this season of Lent. I am writing with some news of a new movie opening just after Easter. Please see below for more information.

Movie: Letters To God, Release April 9, 2010
Below is a letter from folks involved in the release and promotion of "Letters to God" an inspirational movie to be released in theatres on April 9.

Dear Friends,
It is not often that we see excitement build for a movie the way that we've seen the movie LETTERS TO GOD gain momentum. Unlike most Hollywood movies where the experience of a movie is what's anticipated, we’re finding that many are excited about LETTERS TO GOD because of the anticipation of the hope that the movie stirs inside our hearts. The release of LETTERS TO GOD is less than one month away. April 9th brings this emotionally gripping and spiritually uplifting movie to your neighborhood cinema. The movie chronicles letters written to God by a young boy who struggles with cancer. Please spread the word about the hope found in the movie to your circle of influence. Whether it's telling struggling families whom you know about the movie or blogging about it or emailing your friends, LETTERS TO GOD is a movie that so many suffering families need to hear about.

To access the official movie website, Facebook page or You Tube clips, go to the official website at http://www.letterstogodthemovie.com/

To see the discussion guides and other resources available for use in your parish or study groups you can go to www.worthawarenessmarketing.com.

God calls us to commend the good and this movie advances the good in our world. Please take a moment and spread hope by spreading the word about LETTERS TO GOD.

Thank you and God bless,

Record Numbers Expected at Rally 2010!

Hello, Region IV!
I am just getting ready to head out the door to what will be our biggest Rally ever (well at least our biggest Rally in my memory/experience!) We will be over 860 people strong today. Exciting!!! If you are coming, don't forget to check out all the great booths in your free time - especially, I want to call your attention to the CYO Outdoor Ministry Photo Booth. This is your chance to have your picture taken with our seaworthy background! :-) Individuals, small groups, your whole group - whatever...we can capture your Rally experience on film with fun beach/diving themed props and backdrop. Cool, huh? We have a great line up of keynotes and an amazing MC, so get ready for an awesome day. Look for me and say, "hi" and I will be looking for all of you.

See you in a few short hours...

Frances

PS - I will be blogging about our upcoming adult meeting soon - in the meantime, PLEASE RSVP to me if you plan to be there or not.

Friday Update - ACCY Changes

It's the weekend, Region IV...I hope you all had a great Friday and are looking forward to the weekend whatever it might bring! I intended to email everyone earlier today, but the day got away from me...ever have days like that? :-) Brace yourself, this is going to be a LONG post.

Upcoming Adult Meeting

A reminder that we have our next Region IV Adult Meeting scheduled for March 11 at 10:00 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Kelso. I am really excited to gather again with those working in youth and young adult ministry in our region. I will send out an agenda sometime next week and would greatly appreciate it if you all could email and RSVP to me as soon as possible indicating whether or not you plan to attend.

ACCY - Change of Plans! (again)

OK - the third time is a charm, right? If you recall, we had talked about having a diocesan-wide ACCY gathering on June 5. In light of the fact that most deaneries and regions have not yet hosted an ACCY gathering and March is upon us, we thought it might make the most sense to simply use the June 5th gathering as a kick-off and orientation for those youth who will serve next year on the regional ACCY's, as well as those who will also serve as diocesan delegates, rather than trying to do one or two regional ACCY's before June. I will go over this when we meet in person on the 11th, but wanted to give everyone a head's up as soon as possible.

As you are thinking about youth that you would like to invite into ACCY whether as regional members or as diocesan delegates, keep in mind that you are now recruiting them to serve all of next year and the June gathering will be their first gathering and orientation. Make sense? If not, please do not hesitate to call or email me with questions. We (OYYAM staff) also worked on a "job description" for ACCY members, regional and diocesan, and I will be sending that out soon, as well.

As you are talking to youth about this opportunity, please remember that it is strongly encouraged that any youth serving as a diocesan delegate participate in Ascend or Ascend HD this summer (scholarships are available for our region). All ACCY members are encouraged to attend Ascend, but it is particularly important for the diocesan delegates to do so.

I don't want to overwhelm you all with too much information right now, but I will continue to post throughout the next two weeks as updates become available. In light of all this, our two other tentatively scheduled ACCY gatherings for March 27 and April 10 will NOT happen and we will begin with the June 5th gathering instead.

Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies Program

Just a reminder that we still have full scholarships available for our region. Even if you were unable to make this weekend's classes, it is not too late to participate. You can still register for the weekend classes in April and receive the scholarship. Please contact me if you or any of your volunteers would like to get this important training.

Peace,
Frances

ONE Week 2010 Updates!

Happy Friday Region IV! What a beautiful day. I don't know about you, but all this sun reminds me that summer is right around the corner and you know what that means...mission trips and service weeks! This is something I am so personally passionate about - opportunities for service learning for youth and young adults. One of my favorites is our ONE Week program - yes, I am a wee bit biased as this was "my baby" for its first few years, but it truly is one of the best local service weeks out there. Britta asked that I forward you this year's updated schedule, so here goes...

Have a great weekend!

Peace,

Frances

Debbie Fisher's Mom

I am writing today with a request for prayer. Many of you know our registrar, Debbie Fisher. She is the wonderful person on the other end of the phone who answers your questions about summer camp and helps you with all registration questions and needs for Rally, Convention, and retreats. Debbie's mother, Sheila, passed away suddenly last week. Understandably, this is a very difficult time for Debbie. She has asked for prayers from all in her OYYAM and CYO family including all of our collaborators in ministry to youth and young adults - that's you! Please join us in holding Debbie close in your thoughts and prayers at this time.

Thanks.

Peace,
Frances

ACCY

Happy Monday, Region IV!

I hope you all had a great weekend. I received a voice mail from Dave Whitesell this morning and it sounds like the South Sound Deanery had a very powerful Hunger Retreat this weekend. Dave promises us a full report with highlights of the weekend. I will post that on the blog once I receive it. In other news...a reminder that we are not going to start ACCY gatherings until March 27. Please check your email for all the details. I hear that some in our region never check this blog, so that is why I also try to send out important info via email. :-)

Here at OYYAM, we had a great Confirmation Retreat and Young Adult Marriage Prep retreat this weekend. Seems like it was a very spirit-filled weekend all the way around! :-) Great ways to move toward the beginning of Lent.

Have a very blessed week,
Frances

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Hi,
Just a quick update from the road...I am in Los Angeles at the annual meeting for the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry and the meeting of the Board of Directors for the National Catholic Young Adult Ministry Association. Lots of exciting stuff going on here, which I will fill you in on in a future blog post. However, I have exciting news to share about something that is happening in our archdiocese. I have an offer to make to those in Region IV regarding the upcoming CMD Youth Ministry Studies program. I have scholarships available for our region! This is your chance to pursue this training for yourself or for any of your core volunteers. With the scholarships available and free housing at camp, this is an amazing deal. Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to take advantage of our scholarship offer. If you have questions concerning the weekends themselves, please contact Britta Folden in our office. Her email is britta.folden@seattlearch.org

Have a great week.

Peace,
Frances

CMD Certificate Program Important Info!!!

Interested in gaining confidence in your role with youth? Do you need a way of gaining credibility, but don’t have the time for a degree?

The Youth Ministry Studies program is a ministry education program for those in ministry with youth, ages 11 to 18, in both parish and school settings. It equips leaders with the knowledge, skills, practical tools and techniques needed for creative and comprehensive ministry with youth. Recognized by the Archdiocese, these programs provide a solid foundation in catechetical formation and a specialized education in ministry involving adolescent youth.

The program includes eight courses. The primary aim of the program is to promote personal, spiritual and ministerial growth. Participating leaders will experience confidence, competence and credibility in their roles in youth ministry.

Courses will be offered on the weekends at our office in Seattle. The first course is coming up on February 27 – 28th! Find out more about the Youth Ministry Studies program on our website here and learn more about the Center for Ministry Development here .

Interested in signing up or getting more info? Contact Britta.Folden@SeattleArch.org.

Lots of News in the New Year!

Happy New Year, Region IV!
I hope you all are enjoying a great start to your new year. Sorry to be so slow in posting since Christmas, but my new year has started off and never seemed to slow down in the last week or so! :-) I am hoping that by now all of you have seen the minutes from our adult meeting in December. If you did not receive that email and have not seen those notes, please contact me ASAP so that I can send them your way.

I have a request...If you intend to have youth participating in ACCY (and I hope you do!), please contact me as soon as possible. I need to get a sense of how many youth we will be expecting. You can either email me or call me with this information.

Also, we still need volunteers to fill the roles for each of the upcoming ACCY meetings. Please contact me once you decide what roles your group is most interested in filling.

Peace,
Frances
